Biathlete Gow shoots clean for PB at world champs

Canadian biathlete Christian Gow couldn't miss on Friday.

SLOVENIA – Biathlete Christian Gow was hitting bull’s-eyes at the IBU World Championships on Friday (Feb.12).

Shooting clean on the range, the 27-year-old marksman finished 17th in the men’s 10-kilometre sprint in Pokljuka, Slovenia, a career-best in individual racing at a world championship.

With a rifle in hand, Gow demonstrated some of the best shooting of his career this season at 87 per cent overall. It’s way up from last season, when he shot at just under 81 per cent.

He was the only Canadian to shoot perfectly on Friday.

At his first world championships, Trevor Kiers finished 48th (9/10); Adam Runnalls was 56th (8/10), and Scott Gow was 77th (5/10).

Christian, Kiers and Runnalls qualified for Sunday’s (Feb. 14) pursuit race.

A frustrated Scott posted on social media after Friday’s race.

“Biathlon can be a real pain in the ass, and after riding a high a couple of days ago, today is a low that makes me curse this sport. The silver lining is my skiing was good, and there's still more racing to come. Ready to try again on Thursday,” wrote Scott.

The sprint is on the heels of Canada’s eighth place in mixed relay on Wednesday (Feb. 10), which was the team of the Gow brothers, Nadia Moser and Emma Lunder.

On Saturday (Feb. 13), it's the Canadian women's turn to compete in the 7.5-km sprint.

Lunder, Moser, Megan Bankes, and Sarah Beaudry are scheduled for action.
