Big changes for Plaid Goat with Rundle's Revenge partnership

Canmore’s Plaid Goat Mountain Bike Fest is heading into its second year with a major change to its operation with a partnership with TransRockies Race Series Rundle’s Revenge event announced in February.

Canmore’s Plaid Goat Mountain Bike Fest is heading into its second year with a major change to its operation with a partnership with TransRockies Race Series Rundle’s Revenge event announced in February.

The two events are joining forces to host outdoor enthusiasts from across the region at the Canmore Nordic Centre on June 22-24.

Plaid Goat founder Wanda Bogdane said both events are based on having fun and celebrating mountain biking culture, which means they fit well together to be held in the same location.

“We had actually investigated the Canmore Nordic Centre as a venue for the first year,” Bogdane said. “(TransRockies) was very interested in us coming up there as well … there is critical mass in pulling like minded people together in the same space.”

TransRockies’ sixth annual Rundle’s Revenge race – which combines mountain biking and trail running – has 600 to 800 participants and organizer Kevin Houda McDonald said there are synergies to hosting Plaid Goat at the same time, at the same venue.

“Why not partner with Rundle’s Revenge? That way everything is in one spot and we already have participants in our race and they can just walk around and check out Plaid Goat at the Nordic Centre,” he said. “It just made sense to combine everything instead of having the festival downtown and our race at the Nordic Centre. It’s about having everything in one spot to share resources and help each other out.”

Plaid Goat held its inaugural bike fest at Centennial Park in downtown Canmore and was focused on a full weekend celebration of mountain biking culture, including bike demos, a kids area, trail rides and a regional craft beer hub.

Bogdane said the Nordic Centre provides more facilities – like washrooms and parking – to help organizers host the more than 40 vendors and 500 participants in the community.

She said there is nothing like it in Alberta to gather like-minded mountain bike enthusiasts together and, as a result, mountain bike association groups from throughout the province attended.

“The activities last year that were highly successful will be built upon and they are still an inclusive and ridiculously fun nature that anybody can participate in,” Bogdane said.

For McDonald, the Nordic Centre in Canmore offers world class trail running and mountain biking trails and is one of the best venues in North America for the TransRockies Race Series to host an event.

“This is a win-win,” he said. “For people who sign up for the race they will have Plaid Goat right beside the finish area.”
