CANMORE – Slugger Josh Ellis crushed a two-run homer and ace Matthew Arsenault had five strikeouts in the Bow Valley Blues’ dominant 14-4 win against the Calgary Vipers in the championship finals of the Calgary North Baseball League.

The Blues captured the championship banner at Canmore’s Millennium Park on Sunday (June 23), after six innings in Big League action during the season-end tournament.

Ellis hit a two-run bomb to left field (335 feet) in the first inning to set the tone for the game and said the Vipers pitcher served up the ball “just how I like it.”

“I thought about it before and I knew it was in me,” said Ellis, 16. “It’s the kind of stuff you dream of doing in a championship game.”

The Blues’ big bats punished the Vipers early, scoring eight runs and cutting through two pitchers after two innings. Throughout the two-day tournament, the Blues' potent offence outscored opponents 34-13.

Blues’ third baseman and relief pitcher Torin Young had three RBIs and one strikeout in two-thirds of pitching in the final game.

“We’ve been working for the moment all season and our defence was tight and we minimized the errors and Matt pitched a great game, we were all on the sticks all game and it was just a great game for everyone,” said Young.

Arsenault helped the Blues’ cause on the mound and with the stick, throwing a strong 5.1 innings with five strikeouts and driving in two RBIs. The ace said he was tired, but it was his best game of the season.

“I was hitting my spots and throwing at the knees to get ground balls,” said Arsenault, 18. “It was a team win, everyone did something to help.”
