INNISFAIL – For the second year in a row, the Canmore Colligate High School (CCHS) girls golf team secured the zone 3A-4A championship and a spot at provincials.

The team, made up of three Grade 12 students, Michelyn Carmody, Fenja Young, Victoria Greene and Grade 11 student Sydney Pasmeko, travelled to central Alberta for the provincial tournament in Innisfail last week.

In team golf, four team members each play a hole and throw out their highest individual score on each respective hole. Over two rounds, their scores are then combined. In the tournament held at the Alberta Springs Golf Resort, the girls combined for a score of 617, which was good enough for sixth place.

"I am very proud of the girls. They golfed really well and held their own out there on a competitive course," said CCHS athletic director, Darren Anderson.

Also making an appearance at the provincial tournament was Tommy Sluka.

The Grade 11 CCHS student automatically qualified for the boys individual tournament by shooting a 68 during the zone championships at Lynx ridge Golf Club. Despite finishing outside the top two, any score under 76 would grant a golfer a spot at provincials.

Sluka was consistent throughout the tournament, scoring 77 on both days for a total of 154. He finished ninth, in a field of more than 120 golfers.

Anderson is proud of the reputation and the golf team has built over the past few years and is hopeful it will continue to inspire more young golfers. He noted there is strong interest in a few Grade 9 girls, and is hopeful they will be able to carry on the tradition for years to come.

"Sydney will be able to return for next year and be able to pass on that history."
