CANMORE – In March 2021, the Canmore Nordic Centre will be officially hosting the Masters World Cup (MWC), further solidifying its reputation as a wrold-class Nordic sports venue.

This past Sept. 19-22, cross-country skiing representatives from 21 different nations gathered for the World Masters Cross Country Ski Association’s (WMA) annual meeting in Canmore.

Upon a visit to the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park and touring official hotel accommodations partners, directors were, according to organizers, impressed with the results.

“We showed the directors how we will host the over 1,200 skiers expected to attend in 2021," said Norbert Meier event chair for the Masters World Cup 2021 in a press release.

"The weather was stellar, so that helped, but more than that, the directors were impressed with the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, our planned race trails and the technical aspects of the event.

“However, the Masters World Cup is a community celebration of Nordic skiing and the directors also got a taste of Canmore as a place to enjoy skiing [and ski racing] holiday.”

According to the Alberta World Cup Society press release, president of the WMA John Downing noted that with the Nordic Centre’s quality facilities in addition to the Town’s mountain scene, Canmore meets the criteria for hosting the 2021 Masters World Cup.

“In terms of drawing the largest possible turnout, the WMA Board is unanimous in feeling Canmore checks every box for a world-class celebration of lifelong ski sport. We cannot wait until March 2021,” Downing said.

Hosting short, middle and long-distance races, the MWC is a yearly event for international cross-country skiers from 30 to over 90 years old. The 2021 MWC will be hosted by the Alberta World Cup Society alongside Tourism Canmore Kananaskis and will take place from March 4-12, 2021.
