Canucks keep finding podium at Para Nordic World Championships

Natalie Wilkie, Collin Cameron, and Brittany Hudak had big results at the international event.

ÖSTERSUND, SWEDEN – Canadians were busy collecting more medals on the second day of the Para Nordic Skiing World Championships.

Natalie Wilkie and Colin Cameron each won silver, and Brittany Hudak won bronze in the 18-kilometre classic and first cross-country event in Östersund, Sweden, on Sunday (Jan. 22).

Wilkie and Hudak worked together early in the women's standing, leaving USA's Sydney Peterson behind, and setting themselves up for spots on the podium. At about the halfway point, Wilkie's pace picked up and the seven-time Paralympic medallist separated from Hudak and began chasing down rival Vilde Nilsen, who had created a cushy lead in the classic.

However, the three-time Paralympic medallist from Norway proved to be too strong and couldn't be caught, cruising to victory by 86 seconds over Wilkie (57:42.1). Hudak was third across the finish line (59:39.0).

A day earlier, Wilkie celebrated her 22nd birthday in style with a gold during the 7.5 km biathlon sprint.

In the men's ski-skiing classic, Cameron powered to silver (53:33.5). The six-time Paralympic medallist from Bracebridge, Ont., had another strong day on the trails in Sweden after winning his first-ever biathlon race on Jan. 21.

Winning gold was Italy's Giuseppe Romele (50:17.3), and taking bronze was Ukraine's Pavlo Bal (54:23.2).

In the women's sit-skiing, Canada's Christina Picton finished fourth. A day prior, she finished fourth in the biathlon sprint.

Canadian Mark Arendz did not race in the men's standing.

In two days, Canadian athletes have won seven medals (two gold, four silver, one bronze) at the Para Nordic World Championships.
