CANMORE – The tough times for local sporting events is stretching into fall as two more have tapped out due to COVID-19.
The Grizzly Ultra Marathon, scheduled for Oct. 11 at the Canmore Nordic Centre, and the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship, scheduled for Nov. 7-15 at the Canmore Golf and Curling Club, have both been cancelled by organizers.
The Grizzly Ultra, a 50-kilometre solo, or two- and five-person team relay race, announced its decision Monday (Aug. 17) on social media.
“It's with a heavy heart that I must announce cancellation of our 10th annual Grizzly Ultra Marathon,” said race director, Tony Smith. “We were all so hopeful and optimistic that we would be beyond the pandemic and out of the woods by October … I appreciate everyone's patience and understanding during these very challenging times, I am crushed."
Scheduled to be the first Curling Canada championship held in Canmore, the national governing body called off the four-person team competition last week, which would have determined Canada's representatives at the 2021 World Mixed Curling Championship.
“We’re obviously disappointed,” said Darren Cooke, general manager at Canmore Golf and Curling Club. “We were looking forward to hosting a national event of that level. For obvious reasons with travel restrictions, we understand safety before service and making sure people are safe and healthy.”
Cooke added it’s unclear if Curling Canada will bring the event back to Canmore over the next few years, but said the local club will reach out at a later date.
