Strong Bow Valley presence on 2022-23 national ski team

Banff and Canmore athletes were named to the national alpine and ski cross teams on Friday (Oct. 21).

BOW VALLEY – A multi-time world cup gold medallist, established vets, the youngest athlete, and up-and-coming Canmore and Banff skiers were named to Canada’s 2022-23 national ski team.

Alpine Canada Alpin (ACA) named a big 50-athlete roster on Friday (Oct. 21), which includes Erik Read, Trevor Philp, Jeff Read, Liam Wallace, and Britt Richardson in alpine, and Kris Mahler and Zach Belczyk in ski cross.

ACA athletes compete on the world cup circuit in alpine, ski cross, and Para-alpine.

Mahler, 27, is a multi-time world cup gold medallist, most recently winning at Nakiska in Kananaskis Country last January.

Belczyk, 26, looks to get back to form and into the top 10 on the world cup after recovering from a complete ACL tear and two meniscal tears in his right knee in January 2021 during a training session.

Erik Read, 31, is a two-time Olympian who has more than a decade of national team experience. A technical specialist, Read is a top 10 threat in the world cup, and recently finished 13th in giant slalom at the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Philp, 30, is a three-time Olympian and most recently sped to 10th in super-G at the 2022 Winter Olympics. A long-time national team athlete, Philp is consistently a top 10 threat on the world stage.

Jeff Read, 25, a member of the young and exciting Canuck speed team, looks to take the next step in his career this season. His top results on the top circuit include a seventh place in downhill earlier this year.

Richardson, 19, made her world cup debut last season, but mainly stayed in the Nor-Am circuit where she found plenty of podium success in technical events. As the youngest athlete named to the team, Richardson has been a highly-touted prospect since her early teens.

Wallace, 23, was last season’s Nor-Am king, finishing first overall in points for men. The technical skier also made his debut on the world cup last season.
