‘Unforced errors’ costly for senior girls volleyball squad

Unforced errors proved costly for the club looking to go all the way at zones this year.

CANMORE – The Canmore Wolverines senior girls volleyball team will take its lumps and move forward.

At the Canmore Collegiate senior volleyball tournament on Oct. 26-27, “unforced errors” proved costly for the club looking to go all the way this year at zones.

The Wolverines were ousted in the semis by a tough McCoy Colts team in straight sets with one worrying statistic being singled out by head coach Darren Anderson after the match.

“We gave up 13 points on errors in the second set,” he said. “We know have a tough task ahead of us … we wanted to win, but we had too many unforced errors, otherwise we’re right there with these teams.”

However, Anderson and members of the team have found motivation in the loss and identified areas needing improvement ahead of zones coming up fast on Nov. 15-16 in High River.

“We need to really work on our blocking, that’s what hurt us against Crescent Heights and McCoy – the two games we lost to this weekend," Anderson said. "So when you’re playing against teams that hit the ball really well and run a fast paced offence, they just exploited the fact that we had holes in our block all weekend long, so it’s really hard for our defence adjust to that."

Grade 12 Wolverine Lindsay Nunn said the team’s goal is to become zone champions and she and the team are fired up from the home tournie loss.

“With every team, there’s always room for improvement,” Nunn said. “I think we did really well with keeping our intensity up in high energy games and I think we just need to work on consistency for the most part.”

Wolverine Danisen Downer added: “Leading up to zones, the goal is to have high intensity in practice and then going to zones knowing that everyone gave 100 per cent.”

This weekend, the Wolverines play in their final tournament in Strathmore before zones.
