Boxing fans are bracing for another rumble in the Rockies.

Friday night fights are returning to Canmore in May as several local boxers will lace up the gloves next month for the first sanctioned event of the season.

Nick Martin, owner of Canmore Fight Club, will host an event on May 13 at the Canmore Miners’ Union Hall, featuring a stable of young, promising male and female pugilists.

Seven boxers from Canmore and three from Banff will compete in the event against fighters from across the province.

“It’s a way to get my guys some experience. The first fight is always a mess, but it’s good to get it out of the way,” Martin said.

Unlike last year’s K.O. for Cancer, the results will count toward the individual records of the fighters, who will square off against fighters they’ve never faced before.

“Exhibition is really glorified sparring, but this time the guys will be using 10-ounce gloves. It’s not as friendly and there will be a different attitude,” Martin said.

The fights will last three rounds each and feature junior and senior boxers. The card could include a provincial champion, however, Martin could not confirm by press time.

The event will be held in memory of Pieter Grobler, a former teacher in the Bow Valley who also boxed as a young man. Funds raised from the event will go to the Grobler family.

One fighter who will be missing is Martin himself. He’s nursing a hand injury, but plans to return in September, where he will begin a push to make the Canadian national team and perhaps a trip to the Olympics.

Following the memorial fight, Canmore Fight Club plans to host an exclusive night of bouts atop a Calgary skyscraper. The black tie event will feature a new, regulation ring constructed by Martin, who is still working on a venue for this year’s K.O. for Cancer. Last year’s event was held outdoors, however, rain put a damper on the event.

Those interested in tickets for the Pieter Grobler memorial card can pick up tickets at the Canmore Fight Club.
