Wolverines blow out Falcons for first win in two years

The Canmore Wolverines soccer girls offensive was on fire to kick off the season.

CANMORE – Annie Barraclogh’s hat trick lifted the Canmore Wolverines soccer girls to their first victory in two years this week with an absolute thumping of some old foes.

The season opener went down at Millennium Field on Tuesday (Sept. 21), which saw the offensive-minded Wolverines playing to score – and score a lot – against Okotoks’ Foothills Composite Falcons who were run out of town with a 7-0 thrashing to kick off the season.

“It felt pretty good,” said Barraclogh, a Grade 12 midfielder. “Especially because we didn’t know the team would have completely changed over the two years, so we didn’t recognize any of the players and we really didn’t know what to expect going in. Previously they had been quite a strong team, so it was a nice surprise to win.”

Like it is for many teams, the new season following a year off has inserted fresh faces into line-ups and the once learning Grade 10 core from two seasons ago is now the master running the show as Grade 12s.

For the Wolverines squad, it helped that many players are familiar with each other through the Canmore Football Club system while other teams get re-acquitted on the pitch.

“It was really fun to play with everyone again from school from all the different grades because it’s kind of like you have little sisters on the team and stuff like that, so it’s fun to play with them,” said Grade 12 forward Nadia Fish.

The last time the Wolverines took to the field, their season was stifled with game reschedules and postponements due to snowy and icy weather. Under sunny skies and in warm temperatures on Tuesday, the Wolverines easily dispatched the Falcons who were powerless to stop the nifty outside lob game and heavy attack of four players up front whose unyielding pressure resulted in costly errors for the Falcons.

Outside of a few minutes, the majority of the game was spent inside the Falcons zone with the Wolverines controlling the action.

“Frequently what we do is we send a ball through past the defensive line because there’s a sweeper back there. That wasn’t really working, so we had to do more passing and shots from far out,” said Fish.

Along with Barraclogh’s trio of goals, scoring once each were Anna Marino, Sarah Feherty, Sophia Riep and Fish.

“It’s really exciting to come out and win and the goal is to keep that momentum going throughout the season,” said Fish.

The Wolverines next two home games are Thursday (Sept. 23) against Strathmore, and Tuesday (Sept. 28) against Holy Trinity Academy. Both games start at 4:30 p.m.
