Wolverines nab rare accomplishment in Canmore

The Dark Knight ruled the box office during the year the Wolverines last accomplished this feat
CANMORE – The Canmore Wolverines took care of business at home for the first time in over a decade.

The senior boys volleyball team pillaged the Crescent Heights Vikings to take its senior tournament in Canmore on Oct. 25-26. The last time the boys won its home tournie was in 2008 when coaches Steven Stock and Scott Stock were Grade 12 students, Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" ruled the pop charts and The Dark Knight dominated the box office.

“It’s been a long time,” said Grade 11 player Adam Weatherhog. “I think defence has won us a lot of games this year and it will win us a lot more.”

Defence and passing were key for Canmore Collegiate High School (CCHS) over the two days, which included downing Edmonton’s Austin O’Brien Crusaders and then fellow Canmore school, Our Lady of the Snows (OLS) Avalanche in the semifinal in two sets (25-17, 25-19) at Lawrence Grassi Middle School.

“That was our best tournament – that was probably our best games that OLS has played,” said Wendy Banks, Avalanche coach. “Our small school, we didn’t have many on our bench today, but we played amazing. It was a high level of competition and the boys stood up and played well.”

The ferocious Wolverines came out ready against its local rivals though, owning this round of the battle of the Bow Valley.

“We beat (OLS), we beat Banff – they ain’t beating us,” Weatherhog said.

Grade 11 player Alex Lyon added: “We always win, it’s not a big deal.”

In the finals, the Wolverines took out the Medicine Hat team in two sets (25-17, 25-14) at the CCHS gym.

It was a major morale boost the boys wanted for the next few weekends leading into zones, Nov. 15-16.

“We got goals to win and we know we can we just have to come out and play well,” Weatherhog said. “We got some confidence going into Strathmore next weekend and hopefully we’ll walk out of there with some hardware.”
