Zekry wins MMA debut, Erlam stopped in combat jiu-jitsu bout

Mixed results for Canmore fighters at Saturday's Rumble In The Cage.

LETHBRIDGE – Two Bow Valley Jiu Jitsu (BVJJ) fighters had mixed results in their bouts during Saturday’s (Oct. 19) Rumble In The Cage 62 in Lethbridge.

BVJJ’s Adam Zekry won in his amateur mixed martial arts debut and Travis Erlam was forced to tap out in his combat jiu-jitsu bout.

Zekry defeated Calgary’s John Moore at middleweight (185 lbs.) by unanimous decision after three three-minute rounds in the event's kickoff fight.

The fighters opened up the show by trading punches in the three-round battle. Zekry edged Moore on the scorecards in the first round, landing more shots and controlling the cage action with aggressiveness and volume strikes. The Calgary fighter suffered a bloody lip in the process.

Early in the second, Zekry got clipped with a stunning punch, dropping the local fighter to his knee momentarily. Moore’s aggressiveness and confidence rose in the round and he controlled the pace and momentum for most of the three minutes. Despite being tagged early, Zekry regained composure and forced a third and deciding round against the Cardinal MMA fighter.

Moore became dormant in the cage at the worse possible time though, allowing Zekry to get his groove back and control the fight inside the cage. Zekry worked leg kicks on his opponent before throwing bombs at Moore’s head. Moore took down the BVJJ fighter in the fading seconds of the fight, but it wasn’t enough on the judges’ scorecards.

In the lone combat jiu-jitsu bout on the card, Erlam tapped to a triangle choke at 4:34 to Calgary’s Sebastian Lopez.

In the 10-minute round at 195 lbs., Erlam got cut open on the hairline after a head-to-head collision in the opening seconds of the match. Lopez scored a double leg takedown on the BVJJ fighter and was unrelenting in his attack, but Erlam nearly caught Lopez with an armbar during a scramble. Lopez kept top position on Erlam though and eventually secured mount position and locked in a triangle choke from the top.
