BOW VALLEY – Living in a highly sought out tourist area, we sometimes forget we can explore our surroundings too, and there’s a quite a few ways to do so while simultaneously experiencing the outdoors this summer.

In fact, there are a series of different hiking/walking tours that combine the history and wildlife surrounding this beautiful place we call home into a fun-filled adventure.

So strap up those hiking boots and fill up those water bottles, there are places to go and things to see for everyone.

Full Moon Hikes put on by Get Outside

Instead of dancing in the moonlight, you’ll be hiking in it with this unique tour concept.

A different approach to outdoor learning, this hike will take you to a different trail every time with the aim of learning about nightlife in the mountains.

Run by Jenna Nodding, founder and tour guide for Get Outside, you’ll learn about stars and nocturnal animals while seeing some of the loveliest trails in the moonlight.

A bonus – you’ll never know what hike you’re doing until you’re there. Who doesn’t like an element of surprise? Pack some water and appropriate hiking boots for this one.

Visit Get Outside’s website www.getoutsideadventures.ca for more information.

Trails and Tales put on by the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre

If the name isn’t clever enough, don’t worry because local guide Jacob Speckeen’s metaphors will blow you away.

Walk the Canmore trails and find lots of hidden gems alongside Speckeen with his immense knowledge of our community and its history.

From generation to generation, Speckeen will take you back in time to when the town was home to coal miners, to when pioneers first graced the area.

He’ll tell you the stories of a town that refused to quit even when surrounding towns were, and how this beautiful pocket between the mountains we call home came to be the flourishing place we know now.

To join in on one of Speckeen’s walking tours put on by the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre, visit the museum’s Facebook page.

Historical Mine Tours put on by the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre

Speaking of loyal miners, this tour will take you through the history of the Canmore mines themselves alongside former mine manager Gerry Stephenson.

Stephenson will take you through both mines, known as No. 1 and No. 2, as well as the Quarry Lake strip mine and its restoration.

This local storyteller will open your eyes to the way miners lived when Canmore began and why the mines were so integral to its start.

It’s the Canmore Museum and Geoscience Centre’s most popular tour, so why not jump on board.
