John Long
John Edward Long, of Canmore, Alberta passed away on Tuesday March 29, 2022, surrounded by his family. John lived a life envied by all and was a constant companion to his wife Sheila and an enthusiastic supporter of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
John was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on June 10, 1932. Predeceased by his daughter Helene Clare Long, he is survived by his loving wife Sheila Long, his brother Patrick Long and his sister Marsha Long, his daughters Catherine Long and Judith Long, his sons Robert Long, Daniel Long, and Mark Long and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
John grew up in Winnipeg, Manitoba and lived a mischievous and amusing childhood with his 5 brothers and sisters. He attended St. Paul’s school in Winnipeg and started courting Sheila Irene Herriot. John held a business degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and a master’s degree from University of Saskatchewan. He returned to play center for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for one season, until his father told him to get to work.
John married Sheila on December 27,1955 and moved to Red Deer Alberta to start a long and successful business career. John was an entrepreneur before his time, he started and sold many businesses. He was a leader in the business community and his finances and business interests were always a source of constant speculation. While never truly retiring from business he was able to indulge in his love of travelling with Sheila in his mid-fifties.
John built several beautiful houses in Edmonton, Alberta and Canmore Alberta. He lived abroad for 10 years in Dalkey and Gort Ireland with Sheila. John had retirement properties in Gort, Ireland and Naples, Florida. John was an avid pilot and sailor, and he owned several planes and a beautiful sailboat “Dorinda”.
