L D (Douglas) Campbell

1927 – 2020

September 24, 1927 (Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England) – April 4, 2020 (Canmore, Alberta)

English by birth, Canadian by choice, Hiker by heart.

Devoted husband of Mary. Loving father to Anne and Linda. Supportive and forgiving father-in-law to Bill and John. Adoring Gramps to Russell, Phillip, Sean, Patrick (Leila) and Alex. Great-grandfather to Mason and Henry. The youngest of three brothers and uncle to Andrew and Margaret. A good friend to many.

Doug passed away peacefully from natural causes in the foothills of his cherished mountains on April 4th with Mary, his beloved wife, dance partner, and hiking companion by his side.

Doug had a dream of a continuous hiking trail across Canada, coast to coast, and thus pioneered the National Trail, a massive project for a massive country. His persistent and tireless pursuit resulted in a better system of trails within the country, a strong bond between the various hiking groups, and inspired Canadians to walk and explore the outdoors. Doug was also a founding member of the Canmore Meanderthals and Trailminders.

Doug was patient and considerate, thoughtful with the delivery of his message. While quiet about his successes, he was always generous with crediting others. He was a keen writer with a clever turn of phrase, a photographer and a traveller. A passionate Canmorite, he was active in many aspects of town life and a supporter of charitable causes, particularly those benefitting the local community.

We would like to thank the Bethany Cochrane for their exemplary care.

Doug was a true gentleman and shall be greatly missed. When it is safe to do so, the family will be hitting the trails in remembrance. We invite you to do the same.
