TERRA, Romano

April 5, 1940 – Silvi Marina, Teramo, Italy

October 15, 2022 – Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Romano Terra passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB, on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the age of 82 years.

Romano was born in Silvi Marina, province of Teramo in Abruzzo, Italy, to Maria Carota and Michele Terra. Romano completed his schooling in Chieti, province of Teramo, Italy, and completed Naval Academy in Livorno, Italy. He married Linda Rankin in Hamiota, Manitoba on April 6, 1968. They lived in Rome, Italy, and had two children, Roger Michele and Danilo. Romano spent 21 proud years as an officer in the Italian Navy and retired from service in 1979 with rank of Capitano di Fregata (Lieutenant Colonel). He immigrated with his family to Canada in 1979 and made the city of Calgary his home.

Romano worked as a computer engineer for Sperry UNIVAC, later Unisys, and then as an entrepreneur in computer room servicing. He also helped many Italian Canadians as the honorary Italian Vice Consular Agent (Calgary) and later through his Italian Services Agency. Romano loved to spend time with his four wonderful granddaughters Clara, Melissa, Alena, and Sable. He also loved short trips in his camper van and spending time in his “Casetta” in Canmore. He was affectionately known as “Nonno” to many.

Romano is survived by his wife Linda, two sons Roger, and Danilo, and their families. In Italy, he is survived by his beloved and only sister Rossana De Luca, brother-in-law Nino De Luca, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. Romano also had great affection for his cousins, Antonio Carota in Pescara, Italy, and Gerardo D’Agostino in Caracas, Venezuela. Romano wanted to thank his very special long-time friends in Calgary and Canmore.

He requested to recognize two groups that helped support and remind him of Italy; Edmonton Gruppo ANMI (Associazione Nazionale Marinai d’Italia) and Calgary Gruppo Alpini. Finally, Romano wanted to give very special recognition and grazie to his dear friends in the Italian towns of Silvi, Atri, and Collecorvino.

A heartfelt thanks/grazie to the Southern Alberta ALS society for their support and help during the slow progression of Romano’s illness, the spiritual volunteers from Holy Spirit Parish in Calgary and the exceptional heartfelt care from all staff at Chinook Hospice. Funeral arrangements are with McInnis & Holloway. His wishes were for his ashes to be returned home to be with his parents in the cemetery at Silvi, Italy.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (5340 – 4th Street S.W., Calgary, AB) on Saturday, October 29, 2022, at 11:30 a.m. Reception to follow at the church. Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared and viewed at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
