Clarity for employee housing Canmore’s industrial areas will have to wait a little longer.

The ninth version of an area structure plan (ASP) for Exshaw Mountain Gateway (EMG) passed third reading of council June 13, after four years of back and forth between the municipality and developers.

The polarizing issue of the future of employee housing in Canmore’s light industrial area is returning to council Tuesday (June 4).

“This is a pause, temporarily, on issuing new bed and breakfast home business licences until this council comes to consensus on the revised bylaw, it receives three readings and ministerial consent,” said Coun. Barb Pelham

“We’ve moved the needle significantly in the last decade, but now we’ve done the low hanging fruit and it’s time to go deeper."

The hotel will undergo a “comprehensive top to bottom renovation to transform the hotel” as part of a significant, but undisclosed, investment, with work anticipated to begin in 2024.

“I have felt that today during the public hearing and they’re willing to work with people who are not part of their church, so I see a very big community benefit for us,”

An increase in density for two parcels of land that could lead to 12 residential units – including two potential affordable housing units – was approved by Canmore council on Three Sisters Drive, but highlighted the possible need for a comprehensive planning process for infill development.
