STONEY NAKODA – A Calgary man previously charged with alleged drug trafficking on the Stoney Nakoda First Nation is facing further charges following a search warrant being executed on his home.

The Cochrane RCMP crime reduction and general investigation section said they completed an investigation Thursday (June 17) on the 38-year-old man’s Calgary home. Their search discovered what police believe to be 106 grams of methamphetamine, 53 grams of fentanyl and other “small quantities of other illegal drugs,” according to the media release.

The Calgary man was charged with drug trafficking, possession of drugs with the purpose of trafficking, weapons offences and failing to comply with release conditions.

The man was remanded in custody, police said.

“This arrest is the latest example of the tireless efforts our officers are investing in combating drug abuse in the Stoney Nakoda First Nation and our neighbouring communities,” Cochrane RCMP Insp. David Brunner said in the release.

The original charges stem from January when the Cochrane RCMP general investigation section charged the Calgary man with several offences, including drug trafficking. Police said he was released on conditions and the case is still before the courts.

The original arrest was made following a three-month investigation

“The community plays a large part in this, telling us what their ongoing concerns are,” Cpl Troy Savinkoff told the Cochrane Eagle in March. "Knowing those things, you start to brainstorm ideas among investigators on what might be the most effective way to handle it. We do know that the flow of drugs in and out of the Stoney Nakoda community is a huge concern for the community. This is just the start of other things that we are planning at the Stoney Nakoda detachment, as well as our Crime Reduction and GI [General Investigation) Units, to try to halt that flow as much as we can.
