Two people killed in Highway 1 collision near Morley turnoff

Two people were killed and three were hospitalized after a cube van heading east on the Trans-Canada Highway veered into the west lane Wednesday afternoon, police said.

MORLEY – Two people were killed and three were hospitalized after a cube van heading east on the Trans-Canada Highway veered into the west lane Wednesday afternoon, police said.

The RCMP said their initial investigation had the van colliding with a semi-trailer truck in the west lane after it crossed the median, just east of Morley Road. A white car was then involved in the collision, whose driver and passenger willed announced deceased on the scene, police said. The RCMP said the two people were a 78-year-old man and a 75-year-old woman from Columbia Valley, British Columbia.

A cube van travelling west also struck the semi-trailer truck, with the driver – a 55-year-old Calgary man – of the semi-trailer truck being sent to hospital. The 50-year-old man from Sherwood Park who was driving the cube van that veered into the west lane and the 27-year-old Winnipeg man who was a passenger were also hospitalized, police said.

The RCMP said the three people hospitalized had non-life threatening injuries.

RCMP collision analysts are continuing to investigate and traffic was rerouted through Morley Road to Highway 1A. The Cochrane and Stoney Nakoda RCMP are also on the scene with local paramedics.

Traffic was delayed for about nine hours as police conducted their initial investigation and the area of the highway was reopened at about 8:30 p.m.

The names of the two people who died were not released and the Cochrane RCMP is continiung to investigate.
