STONEY NAKODA – A 21-year-old man was charged with second degree murder by the RCMP in the suspected homicide of a six-month-old infant.

The RCMP Major Crimes unit announced the Stoney Nakoda man was arrested Sept. 1. The man is also facing charges of assault causing bodily harm and choking with intent to injure involving a 24-year-old female victim from a prior incident, police said in a media release.

The infant’s death was first reported Aug. 27 after police said the Stoney Nakoda RCMP responded for a welfare check on a six-month-old infant on Aug. 25. When they entered the home, police found the deceased infant.

An autopsy was completed on Aug. 26 at the chief medical examiner’s office in Calgary and the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes unit has taken the lead in the investigation.

The man has been remanded in custody and will appear Oct. 5 in Cochrane provincial court.

Police said no additional information will be released since it’s now before the courts.
