“They dug the creek down four metres to do this creek mitigation. They didn’t line it. They didn’t armour the bed. They didn’t do anything. Now it is like a channel that is carving down there.”

The site of the new commercial development in Stoney Nakoda First Nation has a long history of Indigenous trade, sport and seasonal gathering – hence its Stoney name: Aktakiyebi Wida, which translates to "a coming together of people."

EDITORIAL: Provincial governments across Canada have been steadily offloading costs to local governments in an effort to make their own annual budgets and deficits more amiable to citizens. However, it comes at a cost as the bills for services still need to be paid by someone.

“We like the idea because it doesn’t prevent people from enjoying parks if they don’t have the ability to pay,” he said. “If they do have the ability to pay, we will be creating an option for them to support the parks voluntarily.”

The next time my family and I are in the area, we can look up at the skyline and the mountains and know because of my dad’s persistence and dedication, the map of the country is a bit different and hopefully for the better.”
