Isn’t it a shame that Canmore council cannot demonstrate good judgement and a more responsible approach to the so called bunny problem?

Amending a bylaw to allow what I can only describe as a senseless and inhumane act – trapping and killing, is totally unjustifiable. Catching any animal with an intention to destroy is not under any circumstances humane.

In a world where alternatives exist, humane alternatives that is, this town shows an unbelievable level of ignorance and arrogance in paying $50,000 in an attempt to ‘deal’ with what some perceive to be a problem. Not only will many bunnies escape this exercise, with or without human assistance, who does this council think it is in kicking out wildlife from an area that was once rampant with it?

Would you be undertaking the same approach to other larger wildlife, I wonder? Fifty thousand dollars would be better spent catching and neutering, not catching and killing.

The problem with this town is that it has too much of a trigger-happy mentality. An animal was shot in Quarry Lake only a couple of years ago, and why? Because some idiot human was totally irresponsible, as is so often the case, so guess what? The animal that has more right to be here than us loses out. That decision as I recall did not sit well with many and neither does this.

Nature when uninterrupted has a way of managing itself. This council is not part of that process and neither should it be.

And don’t kid yourself this is humane – any animal knows instinctively what’s coming – don’t be so naive. I also have to ask just who exactly is the company you propose to use and who intends to oversee their proposed activities? What experience do they have, etc. etc? So many questions yet to be answered.

So far, I have seen nothing from this council that shows it has researched this matter fully and advised of its findings.

The killing fields of Canmore is a very unattractive label attracting undesirable publicity, but as they say, we get in trouble when we stop paying attention and Canmore council has quite clearly failed in that capacity.

Disgusted I am.

Canmore
