Close the doors

Editor:

Close the door, baby, it’s cold outside.

It has now been six years since this issue was raised by a small group of concerned residents. But nothing has changed.

We’re talking about businesses, mostly on Banff Avenue, leaving their front doors open in freezing temperatures. What are these people thinking? Do they leave their doors open at home? Probably not. Basic common sense.

This past Saturday (Nov. 19), though, at -20 C we counted numerous stores with doors wide open.

One of the excuses we have heard is that “unless our door is left ajar, shoppers can’t tell if we are open for business”. This rationale suggests that we are all stupid. If in doubt, post a “we are open” sign in the window.

The Town of Banff is going to great lengths to make Banff a model green community, but chooses to turn a blind eye to this practice. Why this double standard?

Might we be so bold as to make a few recommendations:

1. Shoppers: Boycott any business with their front door left wide open.

2. Fellow community members: Email the mayor and councillors to express your displeasure. You can find their contact info on the Town’s website.

3. Town Council: Pass a bylaw to finally put an end to this bad habit. It’s long overdue.
