Editor:

The Town council approval of the development along the Trans-Canada Highway at Palliser Trail without an overpass or underpass has caused an accident – hit and run – this past weekend that resulted in a young woman being killed.

This is an accident and death that was inevitable. I have watched people crossing the highway. The trails created by people constantly crossing the highway can be seen from Benchlands Trail and Silvertip Resort. I think it is irresponsible to approve so many multi-unit developments adjacent to the Trans-Canada Highway without being aware of the implications.

Many of these units provide affordable housing for people working in Town. Yes, people are responsible for themselves, but unfortunately, the temptation to cross when it saves such a long walk by way of the overpasses is irresistible – all research shows people will shortcut.

Jessie Loucks has had a petition in place since 2018 for an underpass or overpass at Palliser. It is unfortunate that the council has ignored the petition and that a death has occurred.

The pedestrian bridge or underpass should have been required, funded, and built in conjunction with the approval of all the development along Palliser. I sincerely hope council will see this as a priority now to avoid another death.
