LETTER: Banff should look at incentivizing parking for sub-compact vehicles

I propose Banff town council delay the implementation of paid parking. I believe an eco-parking initiative would help the Town.

This initiative is very simple: we create smaller parking spaces that are suitable for sub-compact cars. These parking spots should follow two basic principles of remaining free parking, while other spots can be paid and the sub-compact be closer to attractions.

If this were done, I'd be curious to see how many tourists would rent a sub-compact car to putter around Banff or actually drive one to get here.

It should also be noted, certain electric vehicles are sub-compact cars such as the Chevrolet Bolt. These spots could be upgraded to facilitate recharging at a later date, but it wouldn't be immediately necessary until it's seen the spots for sub-compact cars is successful or not.

If paid parking is being brought in by the Town to increase revenue, the logic would be the more vehicles you can fit into Banff the more money it generates for public coffers.

There is no push to incentivize downsizing our vehicles. The inaction on this front is at odds with both budget concerns and the environment.

Electric cars are still a few years from being affordable. I will be fascinated to see if the Town takes the opportunity to reshape tourism, or chooses to pass on this idea.
