I am writing in response to Hans Helder’s paid political advertisement in the Sept. 30, 2021 issue of the Outlook. I quote this excerpt: “Can we afford to support current councillors who over-rode the recommendations of planning staff who spent years working out the details with the proponents based on council’s direction? Should we not hold them accountable for their decisions?”

I had to read this several times to confirm that I understood what he meant – that is, how dare Town councillors challenge the recommendations of Town staff and the developers?

I have always assumed that the Town council exists to represent the values and aspirations of the citizens, not those of Town staff or outside business interests.

The citizens of Canmore expressed their opposition to Three Sisters Mountain Village most decidedly throughout the six days of public hearings, and the Town council responded with courage, intelligence and foresight in rejecting both area structure plans.

I applaud them for doing so.

Robert R. Janes,

Canmore
