Editor:

I am sincerely hoping that Danielle Smith does not think she has a mandate as our new premier or even that she is any kind of representative of Alberta.

In the leadership race, 84,593 members of the UCP voted. She was elected by a 53.8 per cent margin meaning 45,511 people voted for her. Our current provincial population is approximately 4,543,000 meaning our current premier was elected by pretty much exactly one per cent of our population.

If she truly cares about Alberta rather than her own ideas, which polling shows are not popular with the majority of Albertans, she will either call a general election or if that is not possible under our current rules, she will wait until the May 2023 election to see whether or not she has any real mandate for the changes she is proposing.
