LETTER: MD residents shut out by paid parking program

I was disheartened upon reading the news that Municipal District of Bighorn residents will now be considered tourists and will have to pay for their parking if they want to shop in downtown Canmore.

MD residents honestly don’t have anywhere to turn anymore without having to pay either the provincial, federal or municipal governments one way or another. And I do mean that literally, Banff, Canmore and Kananaskis all now charge MD residents for parking and entrance to our neighbourhood playgrounds.

I honestly don’t know what’s happening in our valley of late, but what I do know is that ‘shop local Canmore’ doesn’t apply to MD Residents as we can’t walk there and I know that this won’t change anything, but people need to know that we are part of this magnificent valley too.

As for myself, I live happily in Exshaw and will adapt to the new rules. To start, I am in the process of closing my downtown Canmore bank where I've been a lifetime member to one that offers free parking and I’m also shopping as much as possible elsewhere. Downtown Canmore, as much as I fell in love with you in the early 1980s, I feel so sad for a community spirit lost forever.
