The motion by Banff council to approach Parks Canada – again – for land outside the Town’s legislated boundary for parking, is akin to a child repeatedly asking for something using different words. In this scenario, the Banff National Park superintendent is the patient parent.

Council does get points for creativity with its comparisons to the Sunshine Village Ski Resort parking issue. The Town of Banff incorporation agreement and the Sunshine Village Ski Resort lease are vastly different. Before wasting $30,000 of Banff taxpayer money, perhaps a phone call to the Town’s legal counsel might be prudent.

Notwithstanding the recent long-awaited expert panel report on recommendations on how best to move people sustainably in the region, the solution, if you need additional parking spaces with a limited land base, is simple. Build parkades and go up.

Those are expensive. Free land from Parks Canada, of course, is not. Regardless, I cannot imagine what land the Town of Banff is willing to give up for this horse trade.
