It is time to address the issue of major oil trains roaring through the Canadian Rocky Mountains. Yes, pipelines may be safer than rail, but as we know, Ottawa is comfortable with the status quo.

I am not an expert, but watching two-kilometre long oil trains roar through Canmore towards the West Coast with millions of barrels of oil never fails to cause concern. It would just be one accident in the mountains that would be a major environmental damage to rivers, forests, wildlife, people and the entire ecosystem of the Rocky Mountains.

The latest derailment in Field, B.C. is yet more cause for concern on how easy it could be.

The federal government has let major pipelines be cancelled to the United States, which is one of our largest customers for oil. There is no doubt something is wrong with this picture. It will take a major calamity to wake up people and the government.

Douglas MacLean,

Canmore
