Editor:

Magicians are known for their sleight-of-hand abilities to manipulate reality so that their audiences believe what they want them to believe which is not real at all. The audience is amazed.

Sadly, the UCP magicians are an incompetent and amateur lot but still successful. Led now by a shock talk show host, the party keeps its elitist me-first consumers loyal by saying what will keep them happy, so they don’t see their own delusional self-serving biases as the possible cause of their frustrations.

First, the talking head runs the Wildrose party, then she jumps to the Progressive Conservatives, and now it's back to the UCP or is it Wildrose again: Now you see her as PC, and now you don’t. Without any concern for the common good, the UCP practises Pavlovian crowd training by demonizing Ottawa, the prime minister/his Liberal Party (the “enemy”?). Good trick.

Instead of ever apologizing for the incompetent economic disasters perpetuated by the UCP party to the tune of $8-9 billion, like a $2.5B failed pipeline, a $4.5B failed AIMCO strategy, an $80 million dollar (and counting) failure of the Canada Energy Centre, they try to goad Ottawa into a constitutional fight (the sovereignty act?). Nice trick.

Instead of focusing on the dangers to individual freedom in this province, the UCP cocoon their followers in a perpetual childlike trance of chants and shock slogans, diverting attention away from any attempt at critical self-appraisal.

Remember the health minister who is reported to have threatened a neighbour with being arrested by the police, then this guy gets elevated to become the Justice Minister. Who will be overseeing the new police force? Hmm, no this did not happen in a banana republic. If a provincial police force was put under the control of this political cadre, would Alberta citizens be safe to freely exercise their rights and opinions without fear of reprisal? What about the RCMP? Do they need to be ready for a new Alberta assault on everything Ottawa?

Eventually, all hate-motivated magician tricks get discovered when the spectacle is revealed as a cover-up for gross incompetency, over-reaching power grabs that have so far wasted time and money while they decimated our health care and education systems as well as our ability to master the real economic/social challenges before us: seniors care, homelessness, resilient strategies to deal with climate change and the environment.

To live in the illusion of the intellectually challenged wealthy elitists remains a political disaster in this province until the people wake up and realize the magician has been putting on a sleight-of-hand show. Time to re-orient ourselves to actual critical thinking as a major part of our decision-making again, otherwise the tricksters win and we all lose at the hands of the tyrannical minority.
