The Bow Valley Clean Air Society (BVCAS), thinks the time has come to install modern roundabouts on Railway Avenue.

Now is the time to install these devices. The one at the east end of Bow Valley Trail has shown many doubters that modern roundabouts work well.

On Railway Avenue, modern roundabouts would allow vehicle flow without the gridlock sets of traffic lights bring.

This form of traffic control gives a better flow than standard traffic lights, and therefore reduces vehicle pollution. Standard traffic lights mean idling cars whether the road is clear or not.

Modern roundabouts are safer, cheaper to maintain, and can’t fail in use, as well as being a traffic calming device. Standard traffic lights have significant installation and maintenance costs. Modern roundabouts have one-time installation costs, plus minimal operational costs.

BVCAS members and volunteers will canvass neighbourhoods in Canmore starting in March through April, to ask that Canmore residents sign a petition to ask our Town council to consider installing modern roundabouts on Railway Avenue.
