There has been much rumour and speculation in the Bow Valley over the past few months about the prospect of Sunshine Village reopening on Canada Day.

Much of this speculation (and the resulting publicity) has been fostered by Sunshine Village itself with the resort having claimed it was “seriously considering” the idea.

To the disappointment of many skiers and boarders, the idea was officially quashed by resort officials in a statement released recently, however. One of the main reasons cited by Doug Firby, Associate Director of Communications, was the fact that the “gondola is getting a major upgrade this year, which means it will not be operational on that date”.

Did the resort honestly only realize this was the case in the past couple of days?

One assumes Sunshine Village does not decide to make major upgrades to one of the most important pieces of its infrastructure on a spontaneous basis just weeks prior to the work taking place.

This begs the question: when did the planning and organization for this major upgrade take place? If said upgrade is indeed going to happen, it’s extremely hard to believe it has not been in the offing whilst the resort has been simultaneously, and therefore disingenuously, talking up chances of a Canada Day opening.

Needlessly stoking the hopes of many skiers and boarders in the area and further afield, you could forgive one for concluding this has been nothing more than a cheap publicity stunt all along.
