BANFF – A fire at Storm Mountain Lodge and Cabins in Banff National Park this afternoon commanded response from the Banff Fire Department, EMS and Parks Canada’s Banff field unit fire crew.

According to officials, fire crews responded to a blaze in the lodge’s maintenance room around 1 p.m., however, the fire resulted in a total loss.

“Storm Mountain Lodge’s maintenance room burned down completely,” said a statement from the Banff Fire Department.

No injuries were reported and no other buildings were affected by the fire, say officials. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

The lodge, constructed in 1922 as of one eight bungalow camps built by the Canadian Pacific Railway to support tourism in the Rocky Mountains, celebrated 100 years of operation in 2022.

“Storm Mountain Bungalow Camp originally consisted of a log lodge with a broad verandah, six log bungalows, a public bathhouse, and bathroom,” states the company’s website. “Six years later another six log bungalows were added. The original lodge and bungalows are still enjoyed by guests today.”

In 2004, the lodge opened to guests in winter for the first time.

It is unclear how many guests were staying at the lodge at the time of the fire. The Outlook has reached out to Storm Mountain Lodge for more information.
