Human remains found in Banff National Park spurs homicide investigation

An investigation has been launched by the RCMP and Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit following the discovery of human remains yesterday (May 9) in Banff National Park.

BANFF NATIONAL PARK – RCMP and the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit are investigating the discovery of human remains found in Banff National Park on Tuesday (May 9).

An area near a rest stop off the eastbound Trans-Canada Highway, east of Banff, was surveyed by CPS homicide investigators after they received information that human remains may be present, according to a Calgary police press release.

"While examining the scene and preparing a plan to search the area, investigators came across the remains," the press release stated.

Banff RCMP confirmed the human remains were discovered within the national park on Tuesday shortly before 11:00 a.m.

They say the remains were located in a wooded area near the Valleyview rest area, adjacent to the Legacy Trail, on the south side of the Trans-Canada Highway.

The remains are believed to be related to a Calgary homicide investigation and an autopsy is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday (May 11), to confirm the identity.

Police say no further information will be released until completion of the autopsy.
