BANFF – Police say speed and alcohol played a role in a car crashing over a steep embankment at Surprise Corner in Banff.

Banff RCMP say the incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. on Monday (Sept. 25) as the man drove uphill along Buffalo Street before driving over the embankment.

“The vehicle rolled and ended up on its roof, and was damaged beyond repair,” said Staff Sgt Mike Buxton-Carr, the detachment commander of Banff RCMP.

“The investigators determined that speed and the consumption of alcohol contributed to this event.”

Buxton-Carr said the driver, who was the only person in the car, was subject to provincial impaired driving sanctions for operating a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg.

The nature of the man’s injuries is not currently known.
