BANFF – A police investigation into a potential suspicious activity at Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park last weekend has concluded no crime was committed.

On Sunday (Sept. 5), a 911 call was made to the police reporting a suspected suspicious incident, prompting the RCMP to search for and issue a photo of a woman with what appeared to be an empty baby stroller as part of their investigation.

“The investigation into the matter reported to have occurred in Johnston Canyon on Sept. 5 has been determined to be non-criminal in nature,” said Cpl. Deanna Fontaine, acting media relations manager for Alberta RCMP media relations group.

“The Banff RCMP would like to thank Parks Canada for their cooperation and assistance, as well as the assistance from the public and the media.”

The canyon between the lower falls was closed on Sunday. In the days following, Roam Transit suspended service to Johnston Canyon due to an “ongoing police situation in the area,” resuming service on Wednesday morning.

At the request of the RCMP, Parks Canada shut down a 23-kilometre section of the Bow Valley Parkway between Fireside day-use area and Castle Mountain.

Parks Canada had few details at the time, including whether public safety specialists were involved in any searches or whether there were divers in the canyon.
