BANFF NATIONAL PARK – A snowfall warning from Environment and Climate Change Canada has been issued for the Banff townsite and Banff, Kootenay and Yoho national parks.

The federal agency declared the warning and that “heavy snow will continue tonight,” with an expected total of 15 to 25 centimetres falling overnight.

“Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow,” stated the warnings. “Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”

As of 4:10 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 25), it stated between eight and 15 cm of snow had already fallen in Banff National Park near Lake Louise, while Yoho and Kootenay national parks were expecting between five to 15 cm of snowfall overnight.

The weather agency warned that “strong gusty winds are accompanying the heavy snow, which is further reducing visibilities in blowing snow.

It added to expect “hazardous winter conditions” in Yoho and Kootenay national parks.

As of about 4:15 p.m. Sunday, the area of Jasper National Park and Saskatchewan River Crossing is expecting to get 20 to 25 cm of snow, which is expected to taper off on Monday.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” the weather warning stated. “If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”
