BOW VALLEY – A snowfall warning has been issued for Banff, Lake Louise and Canmore.

Environment Canada issued the alerts at about 2:15 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 28).

“Heavy snowfall, with total accumulations of 10 to 20 cm, is expected through Thursday,” states the warning.

“Snow falling over the mountains today will intensify and begin to spread eastwards across the northern foothills this evening.”

Environment Canada says heavy snow will move southwards through Thursday and continue into Thursday night over southwestern Alberta.

“Snowfall amounts will vary, with mountainous areas seeing widespread heavy snow,” states the notice.

“Along the foothills, heavy snow will be in narrow bands.”

Drivers are warned that visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions,” according to Environment Canada. “If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Two alerts were issued earlier Wednesday for the Icefields Parkway between Lake Louise and Jasper with heavy snowfall expected over the next two days where between 30 and 40 cm may dump on the region.

“Hazardous winter conditions are expected,” states Environment Canada.

The snowfall that began earlier today is expected to intensify tonight, with heavy snow continuing Thursday and into the evening.

Road closures are possible.

“Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve,” states Environment Canada.

“Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.”
