BANFF – A brazen bandit tried to steal an ATM from the Banff Convenience store on Buffalo Street in the early morning hours of Monday (Sept. 4), leaving the shop completely trashed.

Banff Mounties are investigating the break-and-enter and seeking the public’s help to identify the people and vehicle involved.

According to RCMP, a man parked a vehicle in front of the business at
210 Buffalo Street and entered the premise by breaking a glass pane at approximately 4:45 a.m.

“The suspect wrapped a chain around an automated teller machine and attempted to steal this machine by using the vehicle to pull the chains,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Buxton-Carr
of Banff RCMP in a new release.

“While the attempt to remove the machine from the store was unsuccessful, the suspect did cause extensive damage to the building and its contents.”

Shaggy Rajendran, one of the owners of Banff Convenience, was completely shocked by what he saw, although he said nothing appears to be stolen as far as he knows.

The shop will be closed for the next couple of weeks, said Rajendran.

“All of the store is completely ruined,” said Rajendran. “The sad part is it’s tourist season.”

Banff RCMP are asking for information from any member of the public who may have observed the break-in or seen the truck in the vicinity of Banff Avenue and Buffalo Street.
