ST. ALBERT - The City of St. Albert is warning residents to avoid Lacombe Lake as blue-green algae has been found in the water.

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, is a naturally occurring bacteria that looks like scum or globs on the water's surface, the Alberta Health Services website explains.

“Cyanobacteria can be blue-green, greenish-brown, brown, and/or pinkish-red, and often smell musty or grassy.”

AHS warns that people and animals who come into contact with or ingest the bacteria may develop rashes and irritated skin, sore throats and eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea, and may experience vomiting.

“It’s very toxic, so please keep children, dogs and other pets away,” the city posted online this morning. “The City is monitoring the situation but unfortunately, it can’t be removed from the lake.”

“Access is suspended until further notice and the dog beach gate is closed.”
