A 4-year-old child is in critical condition following a drowning incident in Kings Heights on Tuesday.

According to the Airdrie RCMP, local police received a complaint of a missing 4-year-old child in the Kings Heights neighbourhood at 6:15 p.m. on Oct. 5. Shortly after receiving this call, RCMP received a call of a child found in medical distress.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that bystanders had removed the child from a neighborhood pond, and had administered medical care until EMS arrived. EMS transported the child via ground ambulance to a Calgary hospital.

The RCMP said it received exceptional community co-operation in this investigation and are kindly asking everyone to be mindful of the privacy of the family during this difficult time.

Early media reports said the child was found deceased. The RCMP apologized for sending out this early inaccurate report to outlets.

The child remains in critical condition in hospital.
