More than 20 Alberta towns break low-record temperatures two days in a row

Sundre - For a second consecutive day, bitterly cold temperatures broke records across the province Saturday.

The following areas set a daily minimum temperature record on Saturday, Jan. 13:

• Bow Island area - New record of -40.0 C. Old record of -37.8 C set in 1971. Records in this area have been kept since 1961.

• Brooks area - New record of -42.2 C. Old record of -40.0 C set in 1916. Records in this area have been kept since 1912.

• Camrose area - New record of -44.9 C. Old record of -37.2 C set in 1969. Records in this area have been kept since 1921.

• Cardston area - New record of -38.8 C. Old record of -37.9 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1918.

• Claresholm area - New record of -39.9 C. Old record of -38.9 C set in 1971.Records in this area have been kept since 1951.

• Cold Lake area - New record of -43.1 C. Old record of -42.2 C set in 1953. Records in this area have been kept since 1952.

• Coronation area - New record of -46.2 C. Old record of -37.9 C set in 1979. Records in this area have been kept since 1912.

• Crowsnest area - New record of -40.4 C. Old record of -38.4 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1965.

• Drumheller area - New record of -43.0 C. Old record of -39.7 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1923.

• Edmonton International Airport area - New record of -45.3 C. Old record of -41.7 C set in 1972. Records in this area have been kept since 1959.

• Edson area - New record of -43.5 C. Old record of -40.6 C set in 1972. Records in this area have been kept since 1916.

• Elk Island National Park area - New record of -41.1 C. Old record of -38.1 C set in 2020. Records in this area have been kept since 1966.

• Esther area - New record of -46.5 C. Old record of -34.9 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1985.

• Hendrickson Creek area - New record of -43.2 C. Old record of -41.1 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1995.

• Lloydminster area - New record of -41.9 C. Old record of -37.2 C set in 1972. Records in this area have been kept since 1952.

• Medicine Hat area - New record of -41.4 C. Old record of -38.9 C set in 1916. Records in this area have been kept since 1883.

• Milk River area - New record of -44.2 C. Old record of -36.6 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1994.

• Onefour area - New record of -40.3 C. Old record of -35.0 C set in 1979. Records in this area have been kept since 1928.

• Red Deer area - New record of -44.3 C. Old record of -38.8 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1904.

• Red Earth Creek area - New record of -44.6 C. Old record of -41.4 C set in 1996. Records in this area have been kept since 1994.

• Stony Plain area - New record of -41.0 C. Old record of -35.0 C set in 1972. Records in this area have been kept since 1966.

• Vegreville area - New record of -44.6 C. Old record of -39.5 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1918.

• Wainwright area - New record of -46.3 C. Old record of -39.0 C set in 2005. Records in this area have been kept since 1966.

The federal agency notes that these temperature records have been derived from a selection of historical stations in each geographic area that were active during the period of record.
