RCMP looking for suspects in Janvier church fire

Church in Northern Alberta destroyed by Friday night blaze

The St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Janvier, located about 180 kilometres north of Lac La Biche, has been destroyed by fire.

Wood Buffalo RCMP are reporting that on Friday, Dec. 15, just before 10:30 p.m., they responded to a call of a structure fire in Janvier. Upon arrival, RCMP say the church's wooden structure was fully engulfed in flames.

There were no injuries reported by police in connection to the blaze.

The early investigation is suggesting the fire's cause is suspicious, and some witnesses who police have spoken with say a silver sedan was seen driving away from the church around the time of the fire.

RCMP officials say the matter is currently under investigation.

Anyone with information or CCTV footage regarding the fire, is asked to contact the Wood Buffalo RCMP Detachment at 780-788-4000 or  Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).

The Janvier community has a population of about 420 residents.
