OKOTOKS - One of the sport’s top online resources has named Okotoks’ ballpark as the top in its class.
The home of the Okotoks Dawgs, Seaman Stadium, was recognized as the best ballpark in summer collegiate baseball by Ballpark Digest following a fan vote on the popular website.
“The Dawgs are honoured to have our home, Seaman Stadium, recognized as the best ballpark in summer collegiate baseball,” said Dawgs managing director John Ircandia, in a team release. “Seaman Stadium is a $20-million facility that was built as a labour of love to offer talented youth and summer collegiate players on both sides of the border, facilities where they could hone their skills to the highest level.
“The stadium is the centrepiece of an amateur showcase consisting of two college level stadiums, three youth fields and an indoor training centre, all set in an MLB Spring Training-like setting.”
In the fan vote, Seaman Stadium knocked off last year’s winner, Robin Roberts Stadium, the home of the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes, in the final four. In the final round, Seaman Stadium bested the Vermont Lake Monsters’ Centennial Field to take top spot.
“The Dawgs are proud to be the marquee franchise in the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL), the premier summer college league in Canada,” Ircandia added. “We thank our fans for expressing to our southern neighbors what we in Canada have known for some time: Seaman Stadium truly is the best ballpark in all of summer collegiate baseball!”
Okotoks will be centre stage once again on Tuesday night when the Dawgs host Game 1 of the best-of-three 2023 WCBL Final versus the Medicine Hat Mavericks at 7:05 p.m.
Game 2 is in Medicine Hat on Aug. 16. If necessary, Game 3 would be back at Seaman Stadium on Aug. 17.
