Canmore RCMP step up school bus traffic enforcement

CANMORE – Numerous complaints have prompted RCMP to remind drivers to stop passing school buses when they are dropping off, or picking up students.

“Children’s safety is a priority and there are traffic safety laws that exist to protect them as they are getting on and off buses,” said Cpl. Sabrina Clayton in a press release. “Canmore RCMP are committed to ensuring the safe use of the area roadways as they conduct regular patrols and have laid multiple charges as a result.”

While there is not one specific incident triggering the reminder, Canmore RCMP officials said they continue to receive daily complaints of motorists failing to stop for school buses that are picking up and dropping off children and are now calling it an unfortunate but “common event throughout the community.”

RCMP want to remind motorists, flashing red means stop – no matter what direction you are coming from or how many lanes are across the roadway; prepare to slow down and stop; always watch for children crossing roads; and alternating flashing yellow or amber lights means a bus is slowing down to stop and motorists need to do the same.

Failing to reduce speed or stop for a school bus can result in fines ranging from $465 to $543 accompanied by demerits.
