CANMORE – One person is facing 29 charges following an armed robbery at Safeway in Canmore on Sunday (May 14).

According to RCMP, which received a report of the incident around 4:50 p.m., an employee staff member was threatened with a firearm after approaching two suspects who were reported to be shoplifting.

“One suspect showed the firearm and the suspects then fled the scene, and by the time RCMP members arrived, they were gone,” said Cpl. Gina Slaney, public information officer for RCMP's southern Alberta district.

RCMP made numerous patrols but did not locate the suspects until the next day (May 15).

“They were seen walking around Canmore the next day and officers identified them based on descriptions,” said Slaney.

Jesse James Gunn, 34, of no fixed address, has been charged with a total of 29 offences, including two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon, two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, four counts of careless use of a firearm and five counts of breaching conditions of a release order.

RCMP said some of Gunn’s other charges include possession of a firearm without possessing a licence and failure to comply.

After a judicial interim release hearing, Gunn was remanded into custody and his next court appearance is in Alberta provincial court in Canmore on May 24, 2023.

The second suspect was not charged in the investigation.
