CANMORE –  A 67-year-old Canmore man is dead following a serious motor vehicle collision on Palliser Trail in Canmore on Thursday afternoon (April 20).

Police, Canmore Fire-Rescue and ambulance personnel were quick to respond to the scene, where a covered body was on the road and appeared to have been thrown from a silver-coloured SUV.

The road was reopened at about 6:30 p.m. after the RCMP collision analyst completed the immediate investigation.

Police say the driver of an SUV, a 67-year-old male and a resident of Canmore, was declared dead at the scene. The driver of a pickup truck, a 39-year-old Canmore man, was transported to Canmore General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police say the crash involving an SUV and pick-up truck happened at about 1:50 p.m. on Palliser Trail at Exit 86 in Canmore, which is located across the Trans-Canada Highway from the Travel Alberta Visitor Information Centre.

"Preliminary investigation revealed that the SUV was travelling westbound and the pickup truck was east bound when they collided," said Cpl. Gina Slaney, public information officer with the RCMP's Southern Alberta District.

STARS air ambulance was stood down after attempts at resuscitating the man were unsuccessful.

"We were stood down on this request by medics on scene as we were not medically required," said Deb Tetley, a spokesperson for STARS in an email.

RCMP asked motorists to avoid the area while the collision analyst did their work.
