BANFF – The man charged with second degree murder following a fatal stabbing in Banff last weekend will make his next court appearance on Oct. 5.

John Sproule, 20, of Lake Country, B.C, appeared via CCTV in Canmore Provincial Court on Wednesday morning (Sept. 7) from the Calgary Remand Centre where he is being held in custody.

He is charged with second degree murder following the stabbing death of a 27-year-old man from Foothills County outside the Dancing Sasquatch in the early morning hours of Sept. 3.

Sproule's mother, from Kelowna, B.C., was in the courtroom during her son’s first appearance on the murder charge.

“We’re asking that the matter go over to next month please so we can obtain disclosure, and decide on next steps,” said lawyer Eamon O’Keefe.

Sproule is scheduled to be back in Canmoore Provincial Court on Oct. 5 at 9:30 a.m.

Also in Canmore court on Sept. 7 was the lawyer representing John Arrizza, the 22-year-old man charged with the second degree murder of lifelong Banff resident Ethan Enns-Goneau on Aug. 5.

The 26-year-old Banff resident died after being stabbed in the bathroom shortly after getting to the Dancing Sasquatch with a friend.

Arrizza did not appear in court or join by CCTV from the Calgary Remand Centre where he is being held, but his lawyer, Calgary-based defence attorney Katherin Beyak, asked for an adjournment.

“We still have not received any disclosure from the Crown on this matter so seeking an adjournment for that purpose,” she said.

The prosecution advised disclosure would be available sometime next week and the matter was set over to Sept. 28 to allow time for review of that material.

“The accused obviously consents to remain in custody until that time and would request appearance by CCTV on that date if required,” said Beyak.
